The three W’s of the Auction, When, where and What?
The BCCI has decided to go with Mini-Auction format for IPL 2026 in which the teams will focus mainly on filling up the gaps in their teams and not rebuilding the entire team.
The expected dates of the auction are between December 13th, 2025 to December 15th, 2025. Although the dates have not yet been confirmed by the BCCI, these dates will give teams ample amount of time to be prepared and also provide them with a clear timeline. The venue of the auction is still not finalized but is expected to be held in Mumbai with Delhi as a Backup. The new venues will make things easier for the teams, from the past auction which were held in Dubai in 2024 and Jeddah in 2025.
The are some important that have been finalized and will decide on the player composition of the teams. November 15th is the deadline given to the teams to decide on the players to retain and which to let go. This date is very important as this will decide which players will be available for the auction.
The teams will also have a trade window which will be open until a week before the final auction. During this trade window the teams are allowed to swap player or buy them with cash from another team.
A bigger budget to each team for player auctions.
The most significant change in the 2026 season of IPL is that the team budget for the auction has increased, and now the teams will have 151 Crore purse to spend in auctions. The bigger budget allows the teams to bid more aggressively on players that they need.
With bigger price pool for auction another big change in the finances of the league is the increase match for players that have played in the matches. Players will now get 7.5 Lac for every game they play and this is not included in the auction price and bonuses.
Changes to the player retention rule and Right to Match card.
There are major changes to the rule of player retention and Right to Match cards, the teams can now retain maximum of 6 players. The teams will have two options on how they can retain their players, they could either retain them before the auction or they can use RTM card during the auction. Although the teams have some leeway on who they can keep, there are still limitations. A team can keep maximum of 5 Experienced player and 2 new Indian Players.
There are also some changes in the Right to Match card. Now the teams bidding for the player will have one last chance to offer more money after the team has used RTM to retain the player. This new change in the way the RTM works can lead to bidding wars and also change the way the teams use RTM. Now the teams will be wary of using the RTM card and might only use then for their key players.
This strict limitation of six player retention and larger budget for auction will result in teams being able to keep their core players while also chasing after the top players of other teams. This will result in top players price being increased significantly, and will also result in a big shuffle in the team player arrangements and star players in the league.
